Governor Noem Labels Chicago a 'War Zone' After Federal Officers Shoot Woman

Kristi Noem, who serves as Donald Trump's top security official, labeled Chicago as "a combat zone" on Sunday. This occurred following government officers shot a woman, and the governor of Illinois accused the administration of fueling the crisis rather than fixing it.

Noem's Appearance on Fox News

During an appearance on a news channel Sunday morning, Noem targeted the city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson. Johnson has publicly opposed of the federal immigration operations and sending of the national guard in Illinois, a measure he called "unhinged and unhealthy".

"This is incorrect, there should be consequences for that and for officials that stand up and deliberately mislead about the situation on the ground," remarked. "Chicago is a war zone and he’s lying so that criminals can go in there and harm residents."

Federal Deployment and The President's Authorization

These comments followed Trump’s authorization to send 300 members of the Illinois national guard to Chicago, with instructions to protect federal officers and facilities. This action happened just shortly after national guard troops were sent to Washington, where the president federalized the city’s police force in what he called a "clampdown" on crime, a strategy now extending to a string of other US cities. "We will address Chicago likely soon," Trump had said previously.

Noem's Justification of Government Actions

Noem defended the administration’s course of action, stating on television that locals supported the federal involvement. "They understand that where we have gone we have made it much more free," she said. "People are much safer, we have removed numerous offenders that are no longer roaming of Chicago, simply because we’ve been there."

State Leader JB Pritzker Responds

Speaking on a CNN program on Sunday, the Democratic Illinois governor, JB Pritzker, claimed the federal government of escalating the crisis instead of solving it. "They are the ones who are turning it into a battlefield," he stated.

"They must leave of Chicago. Unless they concentrate on the most dangerous criminals, as the commander-in-chief promised they intend to do, they need to get the heck out."

Federal Agents Incident Information

Border patrol agents on Saturday fired at and wounded a woman while firing at someone who attempted to hit them. The woman who was shot was a US citizen and was carrying a firearm, a government spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said, adding that the woman was alleged in a US Customs and Border Protection alert last week of doxing agents.

Pritzker's Condemnation on Online Platform

The governor also denounced the action in a post on X on Saturday, stating: "The Trump Administration’s security agency presented a demand: mobilize your forces, or we will." He labeled the decision "absolutely outrageous and un-American," and noted that it had been made "against our will".
