Chinese Figure Skaters Face Investigation After Holding Prop Weapon at Competition

ISU officials are conducting a formal inquiry following a pair of Chinese figure skaters appeared holding an object resembling a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video captured the skaters waiting with a sizable prop in the form of a rocket labeled “DF-61” while waiting for the judges' results at the “kiss and cry” zone on Saturday.

This model is a recently introduced Chinese-made ground-launched long-range weapon capable of transporting atomic warheads, which was displayed at a military parade recently.

Officials is aware of an unsuitable soft toy appears to have been one of the objects thrown on to the ice by spectators after a performance during the competition,” the organization commented via a release.

“The soft toy was subsequently handled by the athletes after their performance. The ISU regrets this occurrence and will look into it more deeply.”

The duo finished in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by the American pair of the United States.
