Brave Train Employee Endures Life-Threatening Injuries During Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Train

A valiant railway staff member who intervened to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing attack on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance video allegedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims fleeing through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in custody for interrogation. Authorities declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five individuals have since been discharged from hospital.

A bystander recorded the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted police on the station. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous employee of rail staff whose family are being supported by specialist personnel,” stated a high-ranking police officer.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Measures

Rail unions were swift to praise staff and call for more measures. A union official stated he would be “requesting urgent meetings with government, train companies and police to ensure that we have the best possible support, resources and robust procedures in place”.

A different union leader encouraged the train operator and government “to act swiftly to examine security, to support the impacted workers, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Action

The operator who stopped the train at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been commended by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver didn’t stop the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” explained a union official.

Further Details

Police said they got the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially wondering if the event was a Halloween prank, but soon understood from people's faces that it was real.

Authorities have stated there is no evidence to indicate the event was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to provide with any further details.

Rail services on the affected route are expected to have disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to defer their travel where feasible.

Individuals with information that could assist the inquiry are encouraged to contact police by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
