Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Warning to Move FIFA World Cup Games from City

The mayor of Boston, Michelle Wu, indicated that the municipality was prepared for a dispute with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup tournament matches from Gillette Stadium, located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Boston.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to respond to comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." President Trump had warned that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is locked down by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

Wu continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for power, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are issued at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."

Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging Boston's values." She concluded by emphasizing her support for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."

The President's Comments and FIFA's Role

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed alongside Trump at the Gaza summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the White House and given World Cup tournament and club championship awards to Trump as presents.

Earlier, Trump was asked about unrest in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being burned. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's great."

Trump continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also directly criticized Mayor Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Details

President Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.

The US is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The 48-team event is scheduled to be played from 11 June to 19 July in the coming year.
